The Ridgeway

The Ridgeway is a National Trail that runs from Ivinghoe Beacon, near Tring, to Overton Hill, near Marlborough. It covers a total distance of about 87 miles.(Google Maps overview)

I started to think seriously about wanting to walk the Ridgeway about 10 years ago and over the winter of 1999-2000 we started to train for it with some day long walks. However, in early January 2000 I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes and the Ridgeway plan was shelved. In early 2008, when I was thinking about where to go on holiday, I looked at the finances and decided that a holiday abroad was not an option this year. We therefore agreed to have a go at walking the Ridgeway. We agreed on a start date of 21st June - the longest day of the year and outside of school holidays.

We did two practice walks, one of one day duration and one of two days duration, and then it was the real thing.

Cotswold Way

"The Cotswold Way is a long distance walking Trail that runs between the market town of Chipping Campden in the north and the city of Bath in the south.

The Trail is 102 miles (164 km) long, and runs for most of its length on the Cotswold escarpment.  It passes through many picturesque villages and close to a significant number of historic sites, for example the Roman heritage at Bath, the Neolithic burial chamber at Belas Knap, Sudeley Castle near Winchcombe, Hailes Abbey and many beautiful churches and historic houses." (From the National Trails website) .

D'arcy Dalton Way

From Wormleighton near Banbury to Waylands Smithy on the Ridgeway, this 66 mile walk follows the Oxfordshire county boundary and was created to link the Oxford Canal towpath (north of Banbury), the Oxfordshire Way, the Thames Path and the Ridgeway.

The name of this route commemorates one of the founding members of the Oxford Fieldpaths Society, Colonel W.P. d'Arcy Dalton (1893 - 1981).
