European Electronique June 2004 - May 2008

My work at European Electronique was split between three roles:

Microsoft Office Support

European Electronique have a number of customers who have a range of support contracts with them. This support may include Microsoft Office Support. Customers contacted me via telephone or email for help with a range of problems with Microsoft Office. The solutions to these problems ranged from the very quick (such as how to print a word document double sided or how to hide non printing characters in a document), through such topics as creating a mail merge in Word or a Pivot table in Excel, to more complex solutions such as developing complex macros in Excel or Project.

In order to solve these problems:

  • I may have been able to talk the customer through the situation over the phone.
  • I may have had to ask the customer to send me the file to look at (this had the advantages that I could see the problem in more detail and the customer was able to get on with other work while I sought a solution).
  • I was able to use remote access software to gain control of the customer's PC

I never knew what challenges I would be given from one day to the next, which I found very enjoyable.

Microsoft Office Training

At the offices in Eynsham European Electronique had a dedicated training room, complete with its own network, server and interactive whiteboard. I was able to deliver training courses for up to eight delegates at a time on the main applications within Office 2003 and 2007:

  • Access
  • Excel
  • Outlook
  • Project
  • PowerPoint
  • Word

I also used to deliver a course on Presentation Skills to complement the PowerPoint course.

In addition to the training I delivered in house I also visited customer sites to deliver training on the SMART interactive whiteboard.

Internal Business Support and Development

This aspect of my role entailed me working on projects for internal and external clients. I used Microsoft Visual Studio .Net 2003 to develop web applications that pull data from a range of SQL databases. These pages were then integrated into Page Viewer Web Parts within a Microsoft Sharepoint Server web application.

I also researched and developed a production level website template that is used on the new company internet site.

In addition I used Excel, VBA and SQL to automate the generation of reports from our Service Desk systems, and assisted our Technical Services Manager to produce accurate, up to date reports on our service desk and field service engineer activities.
